Thinking about trying singing?
Singing together in a choir is the perfect way to chase away the blues. It has many benefits: releases endorphins and sustains a healthy immune system, improving memory and reducing stress and depression levels. Best of all it improves a sense of happiness and well-being.
We have a Director of Music who brings fresh ideas and exciting challenges to our members. She is a classically trained singer who has a wealth of musical experience. She has a warm and encouraging style that gets the best out of us. One of her plans is to host a musical evening of cheese.
Try singing with our Choir
We are a friendly, non-audition choir and would be very pleased to have you along to try us out and hopefully to join. New members are always very welcome and you don’t need an audition. It helps if you can read music or can follow it to a degree but many of our members learn by ear and we provide practice parts to help you. If you wish to join you are very welcome to come to rehearsals for 2 or 3 weeks to see if you enjoy singing with us and there is no obligation for you to stay or pay. If you would like to chat about the choir first then ring our Membership Secretary, Liz, on 01803 475008.
If you would like to come along we rehearse on Thursdays at Central Church, Tor Hill Road, Torquay TQ2 5RN. Doors open at 7.15pm and rehearsals start at 7.30pm until 9.30pm.
Becoming a Member
If you decide to continue singing with us then we will ask you to become a member, (which may be subject to the waiting list). We are delighted to welcome students and young people as members (under 19s do not pay a membership fee).
Please note that South Devon Choir reserves the right to review the choral balance and other constraints involved with running a choir and you may have to wait until space is available.
How much does it cost to join South Devon Choir?
There is an annual membership fee of £175 for the season September 2026-July 2027. For those joining midway through the year please have a chat to our Treasurer, Sara.
The more people join us to sing the more we can spread the cost of doing what we all love so please spread the word and encourage friends and family to sing, become supporters and audience members.
If the membership fee is an issue please do discuss this with our Treasurer.
Performing with the Choir
We perform two public concerts a year as well our annual carol concert and summer events. You will be encouraged to attend sufficient rehearsals to be concert ready, that is, knowing the music and confident to participate in your section of the Choir. Practice parts are usually available and you are encouraged to make use of these resources.
