Welcome to South Devon Choir

Our new look

South Devon Choir began singing choral music together in this lovely area in 1871 and our 2021-22 Season marks our 150th Anniversary.

Throughout the decades we have changed and developed to cope with the challenges we have encountered.

We commence our 150th Anniversary Season with an updated look and a welcome return to rehearsals in person once again, initially at a different venue, Central Church, Tor Hill Road, Torquay which is more spacious.

We hope that members old and new will return to sing and practice one of the all-time great choral favourites, Handel’s Messiah.

About South Devon Choir

We are a large choir and every Thursday, until the Corona Virus outbreak, we gathered at St Pauls Church Hall, Torquay Road, Preston, Paignton to learn works ranging from Bizet’s Te Deum and Handel’s Messiah to Horawitz and Flanders’ Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo and Karl Jenkins The Armed Man.  In fact nearly all the historical oratorios, cantatas and choral works have been performed at concerts as well as 20th and 21st century compositions.

Our Online Choir

Following the virus outbreak and lockdown in March 2020 we took to singing online via Microsoft Teams.  Our lockdown repertoire took us on a wide ranging journey from Tchaikovski’s Tebe Poem and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solonnelle to O Waly Waly,  You’ll Never Walk Alone and the James Bond Theme.

We started 2021 in a new lockdown but with plenty of hope and enthusiasm and rehearsing Haydn’s magical and magnificent “The Creation”.  Along the way we have had online coffee mornings, an online risotto cook-along with our Director of Music, quizzes and bring your own cream teas and not forgetting that our Hon. Secretary has kept us up to date with a regular weekly newsletter.

We welcome new members. We are a friendly, non-audition choir and would be very pleased to have you along to try us out and hopefully, to join.

Do get in touch if you would like more information – New Members

And before Corona Virus – a proper concert

Hi I am a member of New century singers in Bovey Tracey. We celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2019. When covid hit we went on to rehearsing on our Tuesday nights on zoom. We have just gone back to outside rehearsals, which us great.

However our choir master is leaving and our accompanist. So without these core people we may not be able to continue. We do all sorts of music from classical, to musicals, to folk to pop. So do also need to attract a younger membership for future proofing also. But at least do something so our choir does not fold.

I was just wondering if you have any links or leads so we can get these core people? We have had some interest but nothing concrete.

Any help would be great as you are well established and may have to leads. Thanks

Hi Claire, sorry not to have replied – we hope you have found someone to help you now but if not have you tried advertising on Making Music, abcd (Association of British Choral Directors) or British Choirs on the Net? SDC 🙂
